A List of Places and Ideas For Artists To Find Inspiration

Today, I thought I'd just share a list of places and ideas where I find art inspiration and hope that it can help other artists.

  1. Filling Instagram and Facebook feed with other artists' works. I always find inspiration in following my favorite artists and finding new ones. Often, I find new subjects and techniques to try in my own paintings.

  2. Being out in nature. There's nothing like finding inspiration for painting while listening to the waves on the beach or sitting by the lake surrounded by fall colors.

  3. Watching documentaries and movies about nature and history. A lot of interesting subjects pop up in these that often inspire me. Maybe it's a beautiful costume or a castle, or a night-time safari scene that will spark your imagination and would make you want to paint it.

  4. Reading fiction. Books open up whole new worlds for us, and we can use those worlds that are painted with words to paint them with our watercolors, pastels, oils or acrylics.

  5. Doing an art challenge. There are online art challenges or you can just create one for yourself. For example, you an draw or paint everything you find in one room of your house, like the kitchen. Or do a series of only one subject, such as seascape or sky, for a month. There are limitless ideas for art challenges.

  6. Teaching yourself a very new drawing or painting skill that makes you step out of your comfort zone. Take a class on one of e-learning platforms, such as Skillshare or Udemy (click on the links if you want to check those out; you can also get a free 14 day trial from Skillshare via that link), follow free tutorials on YouTube or attend a workshop taught by your favorite artist.

  7. Going to art shows and museums. And while we're in the age of Covid19 and can't attend those in person, there are also virtual tours of many world museum available online now. For example, online tours at the Louvre or a virtual tour of the Florence's Uffizi Gallery

What are your inspirations for art? I would love to hear from you, leave me a comment.
