Why You Shouldn't Worry About Developing One Painting Style (Especially In The Beginning)

I believe that the only way you can find your own style (if and when you do) is by trying out many different styles. Have fun with the process. Don't even worry about your own style, especially in the beginning of your career as an artist - or, especially, if art is a hobby. By consciously concentrating on figuring out your style as a goal, you loose the ability to experiment, have fun and discover new things you may not even have paid attention to if that was your sole purpose.

Another important factor to understand is that you often learn and start experiencing by copying other artists. Now, be very careful with copying for profit or without giving credit to the original. That is a very important point. Having said that, if you keep that in mind, copying is OK. Trying different teachers' methods is OK. In fact, I would strongly encourage that. In times past, students copied from the masters or worked for a while in the style of the master that studied with. That was a requirement in most art apprenticeships going back generations and generations.

Now, once you try different styles and techniques, you may find one that you enjoy the most. Or you may decide to combine them and create your own very unique style. The point is, you will start developing your own art style without thinking about it.

I also strongly encourage continuous education and experimenting. I know that I personally will never stop doing that because I have fun doing it, and I get to learn and hone skills all the time. Have a student mindset your whole life - it will help open up new horizons and bring joy into your art world.
